SA1 2009 Science Answers (Q39 & 40)

39 (a) Object M could be a magnet.

(b) Unlike poles of Magnet Y and Object M are facing each other. The spring attached to
magnet Y is stretched as the poles of the two magnets attract each other.
The like poles of Object M and Magnet Z are facing each other. Therefore, Magnet Z is
repelled upwards, compressing the spring, making it shorter than the spring attached to
Magnet Y.

40 (a) As the number of strokes given to the iron rods increases, the number of paper clips
attracted by the iron rods increases.

(b) Yes. She used identical iron rods and the same magnet in the experiment.

(c) No. Aluminium rod is made of a non-magnetic material.
